FIVE friends from North Tyneside have raised almost £500 for a badminton club by completing a sponsored climb of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.

The ascent of the 3,209ft Lake District peak took the pals five hours.

Group member Donna Peat said: “It was one of the best days, and I am so proud.

“I can’t believe I reached the top. The views were stunning.”

Three of the group – club secretary Pamela Ferguson, Monica Ferguson and David Mooney – have collected sponsorship money for the climb from friends and family for North Tyneside Junior Badminton Academy.

Pamela said: “Every year, we have to raise money so that we can provide coaching to juniors across North Tyneside, and I am extremely grateful for the donations.

“The academy has been very successful and we are the Northumberland junior league winners for 2012, and we have juniors now training at the Badminton England performance centre at Benfield.

“Without our continuous fundraising, none of this would be achievable.”

The friends are still appealing for donations and sponsorship. To oblige, call Pamela on 07765 371683.
