Youngsters made a splash as a gala returned for the first time in nearly three decades.

More than 60 children took part in a Primary School gala held at Hadrian Leisure Centre.

The last Wallsend Schools Gala was held in 1988 at the now-closed Wallsend Baths.

The youngsters, made up of the six primary schools in Wallsend, were keen to take part in the new swimming gala.

It was re-introduced by swimming teachers Jacqueline Dodds and Sophie Booth, who both work at the leisure centre.

Pupils took part in 13 races and events, each receiving individual medals, while the overall winning school – St Bernadette’s RC Primary – received a trophy from Coun Eddie Darke.

The other primary schools who took part were Wallsend Jubilee, Redesdale, St Columba’s, St Peter’s and Western Community.
