A group aiming to promote cycling have honoured members who have gone the extra mile.

A total of 70 cyclists attended WATBike Cycling Group’s annual awards at Tynemouth Social Club to honour the 100 leisure cycle rides the group had run over the past year.

Activities were also held on the night which raised more than £400 for Ashington-based WATBus Community Transport charity.

The main award of WATBiker of the Year went to Claire Wilkinson, from Holywell.

Claire, 54, who has only been cycling for the past 18 months, said “I was really shocked to win the award – going on the regular WATBike rides has improved my health and fitness tremendously.”

WATBike’s cycling officer Colin Hall said: “Claire is a worthy winner, she has found some of our rides to be rather challenging but showed great determination, and it has been a pleasure to see her cycling develop.”

WATBike run regular guided leisure bike rides for all abilities, many of them starting from Cobalt area.
