A good Samaritan who went to aid of a man who was being assaulted ended up being attacked himself.

The 38-year-old was walking near the entrance to Northumberland Park in North Shields when saw a man being assaulted by a group of others.

When he stepped in to help, he was attacked and a noxious substance was thrown into his eyes. He managed to make off from the area and later received medical treatment for an injury to his right eye.

The attack happened at 11.30pm on Monday, July 11, on Tynemouth Road. Police are carrying out inquiries in the area and are appealing for witnesses. They also want to appeal for the initial man who was also being assaulted to come forward.
