A cyclist from the borough is preparing to take on a mammoth bike ride across the Arctic to raise money for charity.
In May 2014, Gordon Stuart, 24, will ride his motorbike 6,000 miles to Nordkapp, the most northerly point in Europe, within the Arctic Circle.
Gordon attempted the solo trip back in May 2011 but was involved in an accident on day eight of the trip in Sweden and fell short of his target by 1,000 miles.
Gordon is doing this trip in aid of the charity, Cerebra, which helped his younger brother Robbie, 16, who suffered brain damage from a near-miss cot death at the age of nine months.
Gordon said: “On my last trip I raised £1,700 for Cerebra and I’m hoping to beat that amount this time.
“So far I have support from NE Fit and Nomad-biker Ltd, but I am looking for anyone else who would like to be a sponsor to get in touch.”
The trip will take three weeks and will see Gordon ride from his home town of Whitley Bay through six countries before reaching his destination of Nordkapp 13 days later.
