RETIRED fishermen in North Shields are improving internet skills in the community with free broadband.
The Retired Fishermen’s Group is celebrating having been awarded a year’s free internet connection through BT Community Connections, an award scheme that enables charitable and community organisations to help their community to get online.
The Retired Fishermen’s Group currently has a computer which people can come in and use whenever the centre is open which has already proved a big hit with those who do not have IT equipment at home.
Secretary Steve Drury, said the group now plans to use the broadband connection to run weekly sessions to provide basic levels of IT training, such as how to send e-mails and shop online, to people who don’t have much experience using the internet.
“Knowing how to use the internet can be a great skill for many people,” he said.
