ALLOTMENT holders in North Shields are rooting for support for their event to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee this summer.
Allotment holders at Preston Village are inviting residents along to a jubilee open day on Saturday, June 2, an event being backed by North Tyneside Council.
Those going along will have the opportunity to learn about what gardening was like during the early years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign in the 1950s.
To help jog memories of those times, the allotment holders organising the event are appealing for the loan of garden tools, clothing books, clothes or seed catalogues from that era.
They would also like to gather recollections of gardening during those post-Second World War years, including information about allotment holders’ favourite crops or the biggest pests they faced back then.
