Young air cadets have been honoured for their success over the last year.

The High Sheriff for Tyne and Wear, Mrs Ruth Thompson, OBE, flew in to celebrate the achievements of Longbenton Air Cadets at the squadron’s annual awards evening, named Operation Flying Circus.

She also enrolled a number of cadets while the youngsters told their stories through a sci-fi docu-drama they made in the style of Dr Who.

Mrs Thompson said: “I am very impressed with the hard work and effort that the young people have put in.

“It was a pleasure to be in the company of the adult volunteers who support the ambitions of every young person and help them learn new skills and engage in new experiences.”

Cadet Warrant Officer Chloe Durham, 19, of Forest Hall, was awarded the Cadet of the Year Award.

She said: “Being an air cadet at Longbenton has been the best thing I’ve done. I’ve learned so much about myself and grown-up a lot.”
