A gunman is being hunted by police after a shot was fired at the door of a home in North Shields.
The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning in Hylton Street in the town.
A woman reported the damage caused to her front door after hearing a loud bang at around 1.44am, and then saw a car leaving the street.
Officers attended the scene, and following initial investigations and assessment of the damage, it’s believed it was caused by a firearm.
Police are currently in the area carrying out further enquiries to trace the person responsible for the damage, as well as offer reassurance to residents.
Chief Inspector Dave Willett, from Northumbria Police, said: “Enquiries are in their very early stages but we do suspect the damage has been cause by a firearm of some description.
“Noone has been injured and we do believe this is an isolated incident.
“However, we of course recognise this will cause worry among residents. This is why we have officers in the area to give reassurance and anyone with concerns shouldn’t hesitate in speaking to them.
“We have a team of detectives investigating this incident and are following several lines of enquiry to trace the person responsible.
“I’d ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident, saw the car leaving the street, or noticed anything suspicious to contact us. All information will be dealt with in the strictest of confidence.”
