A school has been honoured for the success of its pupils who are eligible for free school meals.
Collingwood Primary School, in North Shields, has won £1,000 for the exceptional performance of pupil premium children.
The school is planning on using the money for enrichment activities for pupils, including a free theatre visit and specialist PE activities.
A school spokesperson said: “The school has worked very hard with all pupils but especially pupil premium children to ensure that they get the very best start in life.
“Only a very small number of these awards have been given out to schools in the north east.
“We try to provide an enriched environment at our school, so that although this award is for attainment in English and Maths, our children can also speak French, read music, and play a huge variety of sports competitively.
“A large range of free clubs provided by all staff ensure that our pupils have all the opportunities that a private school would offer.
“All of our pupil premium children are helped to find an enrichment activity which suits them, and this gives them self-confidence.”
