Organised by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) and Inside Housing magazine, the awards recognise outstanding work to improve the lives of people in their communities.

The council’s housing strategy team is responsible for providing homes for North Tyneside.

It has secured £7.2m from the government’s Affordable Homes Programme to deliver more than 300 affordable homes in the next year while also received £300,000 to bring empty homes back into use.

Coun John Harrison, cabinet member for housing and environment, said: “The housing strategy team does a great job ensuring that North Tyneside is a fantastic place to live.

“Despite the current economic difficulties we are facing, the team works with private landlords, developers, partners, charities and housing providers to ensure that the housing market remains accessible and works for everyone.”

Emma Maier, editor of Inside Housing, said: “The quality of the entries rose again this year so even to get this far is an amazing achievement.

“In the face of some really stiff competition, North Tyneside Council has shown it is performing at the highest level – well done.”

CIH interim chief executive Gavin Smart said: “The UK Housing Awards recognise the great work being done by housing professionals and organisations across the industry, but they also push us all to do better as a sector.

“We hope the achievements of our finalists will inspire others as they aim to provide the best possible services for residents and communities.

“Congratulations to all of the organisations that have been shortlisted, and best of luck for the ceremony – win or lose your work will help inspire us all to improve.”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on April 21.
