HUMAN remains have been uncovered by a roadworks crew in Tynemouth’s Front Street.
Contractors carrying out improvement works made the grim discovery just after 5pm on Tuesday.
Police officers were called out, and they have taken the bones away for further forensic examination.
A police spokesperson said: “Police have secured the scene and inquiries are under way.
“At this stage, it is too early to provide further details.
“However, officers believe these are very old human bones, and no foul play is suspected.”
A spokesperson for North Tyneside Council added: “During ongoing road improvements being carried out in Tynemouth, remains of bones were found.
“Police were called and were able to carry out forensic tests and advised that work could continue.”
The contractors are upgrading Front Street, aiming to improve access for both pedestrians and cars.
