HUNDREDS of people armed themselves with buckets and spades to take part in Whitley Bay’s fifth annual sandcastle competition.

Overcast weather conditions failed to dampen enthusiasm for the event, organised by North Tyneside Council and Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade.

Altogether, 120 sandcastles and other sculptures were created.

Chamber secretary June Tolson said: “It has been another great turnout for our annual competition, and it was great to see so many children and their parents.”

This year’s overall winner was chosen by Coun George Westwater.

Zoe Brown’s pirate sculpture received the first prize, a £30 shopping voucher donated by the chamber of trade.
