AT the January meeting of Claremont Women’s Institute, the president, Mrs S Keegan welcomed members with a happy new year message.

After the business of the day, Mrs Keegan introduced the speaker Mr D Wakenshaw, ‘A Cullercoats Lad’, who spoke not about Cullercoats but about his life in the police force.

Mr Wakenshaw was born in Cullercoats. He joined the force aged 19 and rose through the ranks in both uniform and plain clothes sections before retiring.

His talk consisted of events during his service and comparisons of police work over the years.

Mrs L Cunningham gave the vote of thanks.

The next meeting will be held at St John’s Church Hall, Ilfracombe Gardens, Whitley Bay on Wednesday, February 16, at 7.30pm. Visitors and new members are welcome.
