A much-used North Tyneside support service is set to expand after receiving a £25,000 boost.

Barnardo’s The Base in Whitley Bay has been handed the funds by the Freemasons’ Grand Charity to support its work with young people, aged 15 to 25.

The scheme aims to provide a safe environment for young people to socialise and offers a daily drop-in service, advice, training, food parcels and group programmes to help with addiction, sexual health and personal development.

The extra cash will fund a part-time project worker for a year, allowing the service to open for an extra five hours a day, and go towards a community youth cafe.

Donald Auld, from the Provincial Grand Lodge Northumberland, who presented the cheque, said: “We are delighted to be able to help fund this important project.”
