Jane looks to improve care in a new role

A BOROUGH GP has been appointed in a pioneering role at a healthcare trust to help improve care for patients.

Dr Jane Weatherstone – a GP partner at Priory Medical Group in North Shields, Tynemouth and Hadrian Park for the last 22 years – is Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s new GP clinical director for North Tyneside.

Jane, a former co-clinical chair of NHS North Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group, will aim to deliver a seamless pathway of care for patients between hospital and community healthcare services by developing the district nursing service and further strengthening links with local GPs.

And part of her role will see her based at North Tyneside General Hospital to gain experience of treating patients with non life-threatening injuries and illnesses.

Jane said: “Having worked directly with patients for more than 20 years, I understand what matters most to them and where improvements can be made to make sure people get the right treatment in the most convenient way.

“My priority will be to work closely with other GPs and the trust’s community staff to make sure we develop services that fit around patients’ lives, not the other way round.”

Jim Mackey, trust chief executive, said: “While we already work in close partnership with our GPs, Jane’s appointment will help to further strengthen this and ultimately bring benefits for patients.

“This is the first appointment of its kind and underlines our commitment to deliver the best possible care – whether this is in hospital, in the community or at home.”

Jane will also be involved in post-graduate training for doctors and looking at development new training schemes in the trust.
