A church is egg-cited as it prepares to spread the Easter message.

St John’s Methodist Church, in Whitley Bay, will be handing out knitted chicks containing chocolate eggs to people in the community.

Over the past six weeks, enthusiastic knitters have made more than 550 chicks.

A spokesperson for the group said: “A knit and natter group was set up at St John’s to knit Christmas Angels and we wanted to carry on. We’ve really enjoyed our Easter project.

“Many church members have also got involved by donating chocolate eggs and helping to label the chicks.”

Some chicks will be given to care home residents and people who are housebound. Others will be given to families and those facing a tough time.
