A Whitley Bay based charity has donated 2,000 items of knitted clothing to families in Nigeria.

The items, knitted by members of Whitley Bay Age UK knitting group, were sent by the Angels of the North charity to the Rotary Club of Mushin Metropolitan in Lagos, who distributed the clothes to the city of Jos.

The charity’s honorary chief executive Barbara Connors-Fowler said: “I was amazed to discover during my time in Nigeria that night time temperatures are low and chilly nights are often accompanied by hail storms.

“Recipients of the knitwear are so grateful to the knitters at Age UK Whitley Bay, and to everyone who donated wool for them to create the garments.”
