A major new investment at a leisure centre is aiming to make a big splash.
North Tyneside Council is investing £300,000 in Waves, on Whitley Bay seafront.
Work, which started on Monday, includes maintenance to the roof and airflow within the building while the Contours’ gym will also be refurbished and new equipment installed. It is expected to be completed by May.
Coun Eddie Darke, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “Each year, the public visit the centre more than 470,000 times which far exceeded our initial expectations.
“Such popularity means some wear and tear is inevitable so we must continue to invest in it and make sure it remains a first-class leisure facility.
“To keep disruption to a minimum, a lot of the work will be carried out overnight, but there will be times when customers will face some disruption.”
“I’d like to apologise in advance for this.”
The work will be carried out on behalf of the council by Kier North Tyneside.
The facility has welcomed nearly three million visitors since it opened in 2009.
The council will keep customers up to date via its website, www.northtyneside.gov.uk
