The Liberal Democrats have selected Dr John Appleby as their Tynemouth candidate for the General Election on June 8.

John, who lives in Whitley Bay, has lived in the North East for more than 30 years.

He is the Head of Mechanical Engineering at Newcastle University and recently stood as the party’s candidate in the Mayoral Election.

John has been a councillor for a disadvantaged area of Newcastle, school governor, trustee of several charities, union branch president and is on regional and national church committees.

He said: “I’m pleased to stand once again for this seat, following the Mayoral Election.

“I’ve spent over half my life on Tyneside and what happens in this area really matters to me.

“Too many southerners think we’re the far north.

“I’d like to see this region thrive, with more local control, with political parties willing to work together, and continuing our strong trading relationship with Europe and the World.

“Did you know that one in seven world leaders are British educated? I also think we need to work together on the environment, for our children and grandchildren’s sake – it’s too important to delay.”
