A NEW career could be on the cards for Martin Clarke after what he hopes will be a winning idea came to him in a dream.

Martin, of Killingworth, used to run Morpeth’s former Clock Tower Store, but he is now making a play for a new type of business altogether.

And if it takes off, he will be living the dream – literally.

That’s because the idea he had for a new game he hopes will get people talking came to him while he was asleep.

“I was playing this game in a dream and was having a great deal of fun,” he said. “It was a vivid dream and was fresh in my mind when I woke up, so I wondered if such a game existed.

“I found that it didn’t ,so I thought it through and took steps to put everything into get the ball rolling to create it.”

The result was TalkAbout, a compact game involving just a timer and a pack of cards.

Suitable for between two and nine players, each is dealt a number of cards face down.

They then take turns to flip the top one over and must talk about the stated subject for one minute without pause, diversion or repetition.

Topics range from simple ones, such as your first crush, worst meal, first pet, worst item of clothing or first song you bought, to deeper subjects such as your biggest regret, the most important lesson you have learned, your future ambitions and your happiest day.

If a player succeeds in the minute-long challenge, they lose the card, but if they fail, they must take another card from the spare pile.

The winner is the first to lose all their cards.

“It is a bit of an ice-breaker, and it is suitable for anyone from seven years old to 100,” said Martin.

“It is a way of giving people confidence to talk in public.

“In America, where they have show-and-tell at school, everyone is talk ready.

“People don’t have a problem with talking in crowds or to groups, whereas in this country people often don’t have that confidence. This is a way of helping.”

The game is designed to offer fun for families, but it could also be used by schools and businesses, and there are even blank cards for people to fill in their own topics to chat about.

“People can tailor the game to suit them,” said Martin.

“A teacher, for example, might use it to encourage children to talk about a subject.

“They can write questions down for a group of children, which could be a good way of revising.

“It could also be used by companies to teach the basics of something.

“This is something which is good fun, and it can be quite therapeutic.

“It makes people think about places or people from years ago, taking them back through time to re-examine what it was they were doing.”

The businessman used local suppliers wherever possible to make the game, and he did all of the design work himself and is now marketing it himself.
