15,000 access the stop smoking service
NEW figures have revealed that more than 15,000 people have accessed Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland's NHS Stop Smoking Services during 2007-08.
Figures recently published by the NHS Information Centre show that more than 7,000 people quit smoking after accessing their local services, which are run by Newcastle Primary Care Trust (PCT), North Tyneside PCT and Northumberland Care Trust.
Bill Toy, Newcastle and North Tyneside's NHS stop smoking services manager, said: "It is really encouraging to see so many people are accessing our services and taking the steps to quit.
"Quitting is not easy but help and support is available from our stop smoking experts and there are nicotine products are on offer.
"There has never been a better time for people to make the decision to quit the habit and I would urge anyone considering giving up to come along to our free drop in to quit sessions and clinics which are held regularly throughout the local areas and seek help and advice from the experts."
Evidence shows that people are up to four times more likely to stop smoking if they get help and support from NHS Stop Smoking Services compared to going it alone.
It can take people a couple of attempts to stop smoking, however, they are more likely to quit if they use the NHS services.
Smoking is the single greatest cause of preventable illness and premature death in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland.
