83 jobs could be created

A COUNCIL could create more than 80 jobs if it moved to more environmentally friendly measures, it has been claimed.

North Tyneside Council could employ 83 new people as well as slash emissions if it insulated its buildings and fitted green energy, North Tyneside Friends of the Earth say following independent research.

The research – by social enterprise and environment experts Carbon Descent – was published to launch a new nationwide campaign calling for local councils to take urgent action to cut CO.

Friends of the Earth's campaign – Get Serious About CO – is calling on councils to commit to cutting carbon dioxide emissions in their local area by at least 40 per cent by 2020, producing an action plan detailed how they will do it.

North Tyneside Council has just published a Climate Change Strategy which contains a wide range of plans to cut emissions.

The research analyses the manpower required to insulate homes and businesses and install green energy on buildings.

New jobs could be available as loft laggers, architects, plumbers, builders, electricians, plasterers and insulation specialists.

Stephen Wedderburn, of North Tyneside Friends of the Earth, said: "With the economy in such a sorry state at the moment, North Tyneside could really use the boost from 83 new local jobs insulating homes and installing renewable energy.

"If North Tyneside Council fully insulated buildings and fitted them with green energy, it would create jobs, slash our carbon dioxide emissions, reduce people's fuel bills and make home much more snug."

But a council spokesperson said: "The council is committed to a borough-wide reduction of CO, and has just published its Climate Change Strategy which outlines a wide range of plans to cut emissions.

"The council has also been successful in gaining a place on the Carbon Trust reduction programme, which is a ten month plan for carbon reduction within the local authority.

"Running alongside this is the Energy Saving Trust 1-2-1 programme, which looks to ensure behavioural change across the council.

"In addition, North Tyneside Council, in partnership with North Tyneside Warm Zone, has been actively working with households across the borough to assess energy efficiency status and provide free or discounted installation measures and energy efficiency advice.

"This partnership has created around 70 jobs since 2007."
