A host of events aim to bring festive cheer

Two major festive events are heading to the borough as part of a series of attractions in December.

St Nicholas Festival is returning to Whitley Bay from Friday, December 6, to Sunday, December 8.

A children’s lamp-lit procession from Marine Park First School to St Paul’s Church will take place on Friday at 4.15pm.

The market will be in the town centre on Friday and Saturday, while the church will hold its Christmas fair from 10am to 2pm on Saturday.

The festival ends on Sunday in the Spanish City Dome, with a range of stalls and Santa’s grotto from 11am to 3pm.

Returning for its 15th year, the popular North Shields Victorian Christmas Market will take place in Northumberland Square on Saturday, December 14, from 10am to 5pm, and December 15, from 10am to 4pm.

There will be more than 100 stalls, live music on the bandstand and a fairground.

A hookie and proggie Christmas decorations workshop is at the Rising Sun Country Park on Saturday, December 7, from 1pm to 3pm. The event costs £10 for adults and £5 for children. For further information or to book, call (0191) 643 2241.

Santa’s Winter Workshop is running at Richardson Dees Park on December 14 and 15, from 1pm to 6pm.

There will be craft workshops to create your own decorations, Santa’s grotto and Christmas stories in the bandstand.

Places for the grotto must be booked in advance and cost £6.50 per child, while the crafts and storytelling are free.

Santa is also returning to St Mary’s Island. Admission to the grotto is £6, which includes a gift for every child.

He will be at the island from 10.30am to 2.30pm on December 7; from 10.30am to 3.30pm on December 8 and 14; 11am to 4.30pm on December 15; 10.30am to 2pm on December 21; 10.30am to 3pm on December 22, 23 and 24.

A Christmas craft fair will be at the island on December 7 and 8.

And stranding events will be at the Island on December 14 and 15. Whilst stranded on the island, children can enjoy Christmas games, crafts and stories, as well as a visit to Santa. Attendees are asked to take a packed lunch. The stranding events cost £12 per child and £5 per adult, booking is essential.
