Academy is facing squeeze in its budget

ST Thomas More Roman Catholic Academy is facing a ‘budget squeeze’.

The announcement follows the story in last week’s News Guardian that jobs were at risk at the school.

Hexham and Newcastle Diocese said the school in Lynn Road, North Shields, is currently consulting staff in relation to next year’s budget.

A statement from the school read: “The school is very popular in the North Tyneside area and attracts students not only from the Catholic partner primary schools but also from a number of local community schools.

“However, local demographics show there is a decline in the number of school pupils in both the Catholic and non-Catholic sector. As school budgets are directly linked to pupil numbers, a consequence is that St Thomas More is facing a budget squeeze in the next financial year.

“The school’s prudent financial management has recently been acknowledged and praised by both the DfE and external auditors.”

No decisions have been made in relation to any changes to staffing.
