Action plan to improve council performance

A PLAN of action is being created aimed at improving the performance of North Tyneside Council.

Following the latest Corporate Performance Assessment of the local authority, concerns were raised about the council's performance and the behaviour of some councillors.

As a result, chief executive Andrew Kerr has been developing a plan of action aimed at overcoming some of the problems identified.

And after a lengthy discussion at their latest full council meeting, members from all sides finally agreed on how the plan should be developed.

Concerns had been raised that it would only be developed by Mr Kerr and cabinet members, but following an amendment by Lib Dem councillor Graeme Brett, the action plan is being brought back to a full council meeting in September for further discussion.

He said: "I'm concerned at the lack of involvement from members.

"It is clear to me that we need to have time set out for when there is going to be involvement with members, when individual reports are given to task groups or scrutiny, and when these are going to be delivered.

"We need to have more detail in this.

"We all want to improve the quality of this council and need a report coming back to show how we are going to be involved in that."

Labour's Coun David Corkey agreed, and said it needed member input as there were some important issues to be discussed.

Mayor Linda Arkley said the councillors needed to have some ownership of the plan.

"It's a great opportunity for us all to work together," she said.

"It gives us the opportunity of doing that and we will set the programme out."

It is hoped that the new plan of action will ensure the council performs successfully in the next inspection.

Among the key actions needed are gaining a better understanding of companies applying to do business with the council, review the constitution, develop job descriptions, discuss strategies to improve member behaviour, and implement the Climate Change Strategy.
