Animals out in force at vets open day

HUNDREDS of pet owners took part in an activity-filled open day at a veterinary surgery in Wallsend.

Blythman and Partners in Station Road, Wallsend, opened its doors for both clients and non-clients to help raise money for animal charities throughout the region.

More than 150 people had signed up to attend before the event, with dozens more turning up on the day.

They were able to take along their loved pets to have a quick examination but also get more advice on looking after them.

There was also a cutest pet competition – won by Elmo the dog who beat off runners up kittens Ruby and Roxy and Lilly, a rabbit.

And other activities on the day included an animal corner, games for children, tombola, egg hunt, children's quiz, activities, fact-finding sessions and face painting for children.

Thanks to donations by guests, the branch raised more than 100 for Feline Friends Cat Sanctuary and Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter.

A spokesman for Blythman and Partners said: "The whole day was an overwhelming success and everyone thorough enjoyed themselves.

"Our aim was to provide a free, family day out for the whole community and not just our clients.

"No space was off limits so guests could visit all of our rooms, including the operation and consultation room.

"We have a close working relationship with both Feline Friends and Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter, and hopefully as a result of the event some stray, abandoned cats and dogs will find a new home with a loving family."
