Arkley returns to office as North Tyneside mayor

NORTH Tyneside has a new mayor after the Conservatives regained control from Labour.

The win sees a return to office for Linda Arkley, who had lost the 2005 election to Labour's John Harrison.

The results were announced after the votes were counted at the Parks Sports Centre in North Shields Friday afternoon.

Mrs Arkley, who was mayor from 2003 to 2005, edged John Harrison into second place.

The victory was secured in the second round as the Conservative candidate failed to claim enough votes in the first selection process.

The defeat is a further blow to the Labour Party as it also suffered heavy defeats in local elections throughout the country.

In North Tyneside, Lib Dem candidate Nigel Huscroft came third after the first round of voting, followed by the BNP's John Burrows, with Green candidate Martin Collins in front of National Front member Robert Batton.

(after second round)

Linda Arkley (C) 27,083

Martin Collins (G) 1,995

Robert Batton (NF) 1,086

After the first round of voting, Mrs Arkley had 24,784 while Mr Harrison had polled 19,823.
