Budding Mary Berrys and Paul Hollwoods across the borough tested their baking skills in a charity competition to raise money for the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade.

The team at the North Shields branch of Newcastle Building Society, who have chosen TVLB as their charity of the year, organised the Bake Off on Friday, where people battled it out against each other to be judged the baker of the best cake – with Avril Dowds crowned the winner.

All the entries were then auctioned off on the day to help boost the total amount raised.

Branch manager Laura Hopkins said: “The trend for home baking has really captured everyone’s imagination over recent years, and we’ve got some keen bakers in our team, so we thought we’d try to find out who has the best baking skills in our local area and bring in some more money for the TVLB along the way.”
