Being good sports wins staff prize

a Wallsend school is celebrating after winning a national award.

Churchill Community College won the Youth Sport Trust’s innovation award for secondary school physical education teaching at a ceremony held in Telford, Shropshire, last week.

Teachers Emma Duckworth and Paul Dunn were there to collect the award, plus £250 worth of vouchers, on behalf of the Churchill Street school.

Emma, head of PE at the school, said: “We’re absolutely ecstatic to receive this award, and it’s a credit to a fantastic team who not only work extremely hard at curriculum time but in extra-curricular time as well.

“They work tirelessly to provide opportunities for all students and are full of innovative ideas that strive to make PE and school sport enjoyable and exciting for all young people.”

The department received the award for its efforts to provide the best possible PE teaching for every student, able-bodied or otherwise.

Annette Montague, education director at the trust, said: “Churchill Community College’s work is a great example of how PE can be a good preparation for school sport and lifelong activity.”
