A former office block in Wallsend could be turned in to homes by a housing provider.
Home Group is looking to build seven new family properties on the site of one of its former buildings at the Old Star House site in Wilson Street, which used to act as a local office for dozens of workers from the Gosforth-based business.
Following changes to working practices which saw some staff relocate to head office and others spend more time working in the community, the site became surplus to requirements.
Now the site could be used to provide seven new two and three-bedroom family homes for local people.
As Home Group already owns the land the units will be built at a cost of £600,000. The Homes and Communities Agency has contributed £200,000.
Emma Richardson, Home Group project manager, said: “Our office in Wilson Street served us well for many years, but by adopting modern technology we’ve been able to help staff spend more time working with our customers without the need to return to an office.
“That meant that Old Star House was sitting empty so we thought we’d use it to meet the need for affordable housing which exists in the area.”
“It’s a site which is close to the town centre and Wallsend Metro station so it should prove popular.”
The initial plans will see four, two-bedroom and three, three-bedroom homes built.
Each two-bedroom home will have one parking space and each three-bedroom home will have two parking spaces.
There will also be visitor parking spaces on site.
