Bookworms across North Tyneside were surprised by the gift of a free novel thanks to this year’s World Book Night givers.

Margaret Goulbourn and her daughter Jeanette were among 20 lucky visitors to St Mary’s Island in Whitley Bay, who received a copy of the Victoria Hislop saga, The Island, from World Book Night giver Pauline Holt.

Pauline, from Tynemouth, a research communications officer at Durham University, decided to stage a ‘books and baklava’ event on St Mary’s Island to celebrate World Book Night.

She said: “I was really pleased to be picked as a giver. Our local restaurant, It’s All Greek 2 Me, kindly donated some baklava to hand out to visitors along with the novel, which is set on the Cretan island of Spinalonga.

“I hoped both the book and the baklava would give people a much-needed taste of sunshine, and where better to give a book called The Island than on an island?”
