Boost for families facing problems

Families struggling in the face of multiple problems and complex needs are to get extra support to help them get back on their feet and into work.

North Tyneside Council is supporting the deliver of the Department of Work and Pension’s European funded FamilyWise programme, subject to contract.

The initiative will increase the level of support – including help with job preparation, dent management, and work with schools, health and housing agencies – available in North Tyneside in partnership with the Wise Group.

Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “We urgently need to help our most troubled families get back on their feet and make sure that their children get a good start in life.

“Helping the most disadvantaged families sort out their problems benefits everyone.

“We know that most of these families are desperate to get out of the spiral of despair they find themselves in, but they’re often overwhelmed by very complex problems and just don’t know where to turn.”

Coun Ian Grayson, cabinet member for children, young people and learning, said: “I’m delighted that the council is support this contract for families in need of support.

“As a council we can offer joined up services and have the staff and the experience to deliver them effectively and efficiently – at no additional cost to the council as this is a national programme funded through the European Social Fund.”
