Borough beach top in UK and Europe

A BOROUGH beach has been ranked in the top five nationwide, and the top 15 in Europe, based on feedback from millions of travellers.

Travel site Trip Advisor, has announced the winners of its 2013 Travellers’ Choice Beaches Awards, that has given North Tyneside double cause for celebration.

Tynemouth Longsands has been listed as fourth best beach in the UK.

Not content with nationwide success, the beach was also ranked as 12th best beach in Europe.

TripAdvisor spokesperson Emma Shaw said: “These awards recognise the best beaches in the UK and beyond, according to those that really matter – travellers that have visited these beaches and given them the highest levels of praise.

“It’s great to see North Tyneside coming up trumps against beaches in Spain, Greece and Italy.”

A mix of golden sand, rocks, dunes and cliffs, Longsands Beach is popular with walkers, swimmers and surfers, the beach looks out towards Tynemouth Lighthouse and is close to English Heritage property Tynemouth Priory.

North Tyneside Mayor, Linda Arkley, said: “I’m delighted that Tynemouth Longsands beach has received this recognition.

“We invest a great deal of time and resources into making our beaches special places to be and this appreciation from the people that use them is fantastic news.

“Our beaches make North Tyneside a great place to live and visit and help us to attract employers.

“There are thousands of people who visit Tynemouth Longsands throughout the year to walk, surf, jog and generally enjoy their leisure.”
