Borough residents are the most active in the region and among the top in the country, according to a new survey.
Research has found North Tyneside has the most active adults out of the 12 local authority areas in the north east and places in the top quarter nationally.
Undertaken by Sport England, the Active People’s Survey – the biggest study of its kind in Europe – found that over 40 per cent of adults living in the borough take part in a sports activity at least once a week.
Coun Eddie Darke, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “Promoting the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle is something which we work really hard to do, and these results are extremely encouraging.
“We have excellent sports facilities in North Tyneside, as well as running a variety of outdoor activities, which are popular with the public.
“It’s also fantastic to always see so many people out in the fresh air in the borough, very much enjoying taking part in exercise in the award-winning parks, beaches and open spaces.”
The results come as the council launches a six week special offer to encourage residents to keep active by using one of its five leisure centres.
The offer, which costs £30, provides access to its five leisure centres, where people can swim, visit the gym, join in one of 195 classes or make use of spa facilities.
