Branching out for right royal event
Pupils from Battle Hill Primary School helping to plant 60 oak trees at Rising Sun Country Park to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. They were joined by The Mayor and Chair of North Tyneside, Linda Arkley and John Stirling, and the Lord Leutenant for Tyne and Wear Nigel Sherlock.
CELEBRATIONS for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee are beginning to take root in the borough.
Youngsters have helped officials from North Tyneside Council plant a tree for every year that Queen Elizabeth II has reigned.
To mark her coming to the throne in 1952, the local authority has planted 60 oak trees at Benton’s Rising Sun Country Park.
Doing the planting were borough mayor Linda Arkley, Nigel Sherlock, lord-lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, and pupils of Wallsend’s Battle Hill Primary School, pictured.
Mrs Arkley said: “We are looking forward to celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and the event at Rising Sun Country Park was a great start to what is shaping up to be a fantastic programme.
“It’s important that we appropriately mark this special occasion, and the tree-planting event is certainly a fitting celebration.”
Council chairman John Stirling was also on hand to help unveil a commemorative plaque at the copse.
Other events in the borough’s programme of diamond jubilee celebrations include parties, lunches and festivals.
