Brando's HMS Bounty to visit the Tyne

THE tall ship used in the 1962 Marlon Brando movie Mutiny on the Bounty will be sailing into the River Tyne next week.

The ship is a replica of that made famous in the 1789 mutiny where Fletcher Christian and several members of the crew left Captain Bligh in the South Pacific.

The current HMS Bounty was built in 1960 for the 1962 MGM film starring Brando as Christian and Trevor Howard as Bligh.

It was also used more recently in two of films in the Disney seriesPirates of the Caribbean.

It is currently touring the country to raise money for the Cutty Sark Conservation Appeal.

It will dock at Blyth's Dun Cow Quay on Tuesday, September 4, before heading to the Tyne at around 10am on Thursday, September 6.

The vessel's exact arrival in the Tyne will not be known until nearer the day.

Other big screen credits for the current vessel include Sponge Bob, Square Pants, the Movie and the 1990 version of Treasure Island starring Charlton Heston and Christian Bale.

Head of marine support and training services in Blyth, Herb Carol, said: "We are delighted that HMS Bounty can make this visit.

"If there is a good breeze she can do 12 knots, if not, the ship will be travelling at about four knots so we cannot give an exact time of arrival but expect to see her sometime on September 4."

Visitors can board HMS Bounty for 5 for adults, 2 for children, and free for under fives.
