Cadets get to grips with a jumbo jet

Four cadets from Wideopen have recently enjoyed training alongside pilots from the British Airways Flight Training Centre at Heathrow.

The lucky cadets flew a British Airways Boeing 747-400 ‘Jumbo’ full-motion flight simulator for two hours each and found it difficult to tell the difference between the simulator and the real-world.

Cadet Sergeant Sam O’Neil, 16, from North Gosforth, said: “I have just completed my Gliding Scholarship with the Air Cadets at RAF Topcliffe. At the end of that course I had the chance to fly a Grob Vigilant motor-glider on my own and gain my solo wings.

“Flying a 747 was very different, the aircraft are obviously massive and have very complex controls so it was a real challenge to fly.

“It was really fun and probably the best thing I have done in the Air Cadets so far.”

Warrant Officer Steve Climpson said the cadets had a brilliant time at the event.
