Bus passengers in North Tyneside are campaigning to have a bus route reinstated to allow them easier access to the hospital.

Bernard Conroy and other residents around West Allotment, Forest Hall, Holystone and Palmersville have to get two buses if they want to attend appointments at North Tynside General Hospital.

Now they want Arriva to bring back the bus route, meaning they can access the hospital every half an hour, or continue to North Shields or Whitley Bay.

Bernard said: “It’s no good when the cold and dark nights come round again and elderly people have to get two buses, it will put people off visiting.”

More than 200 people have signed a petition in support of the campaign.

Nick Knox, area managing director for Arriva North East, said: “We have been working closely with local councillors and residents to see if we can accommodate requests, but the service does not have time to do this.

“ We continue to keep this at the forefront of our thinking, but unfortunately cannot put such a service on at the moment. We will continue to seek any other ideas.”
