Carnival makes a colourful and triumphant return

Waiting for Video...

Thousands of people descended on Whitley Bay as a popular event made a triumphant return after more than two decades.

Both the streets in the town and the newly-established seafront plaza were packed on Bank Holiday Monday as the much loved Whitley Bay Carnival returned to the town after a two decade absence.

Organisers were blessed with sunny weather which helped draw in the crowds.

Local school children, dancers and musicians were joined by members of the public in a vibrant procession through the town from Whitley Bay Metro Station to the newly created plaza at the Spanish City Dome.

Devised by Whitley Bay Big Local partnership – a community led initiative for all who live and work in the Big Local area to get together to improve their community – the carnival brought back to life the colour and fun of the once hugely popular annual town celebration. Residents working with volunteers of Whitley Bay Big Local spoke fondly of the old carnival and many suggested that its reincarnation would provide a welcome boost to the spirit of the town.

Crowds at the carnival were also given the opportunity to view initial town improvement plans which were on display inside the Dome together with advice from a host of experts on how to improve the look and feel of their properties. Organisers hope that the successful event will encourage more residents and local businesses to get involved with Whitley Bay Big Local.
