Celebrating decade of film at Tyneside Cinema

FILM lovers can join in the celebrations of 100 years of cinema on Tyneside on a new interactive website.

TC100 – www.tc100.org – is part of the Tyneside Cinema's contribution to the 100th anniversary of the opening, on April 13, 1908, of the Star Cinema on Prudhoe Street, the first dedicated cinema in Newcastle.

The website, launched this month, has been created by journalist new media pioneer Bill Thompson, who was born in Newcastle, and was the founding head of new media at Guardian newspapers.

Visitors to the website will be able to read people's memories of their visits to the many cinemas in the region.

They can post their own stories, photos or videos, too, to build up a dynamic record of the important role cinema played in the life of the north east.

Tyneside Cinema chief executive Mark Dobson is enthusiastic about the future of film: "This centenary of 100 years of cinema in Newcastle is a major milestone and we hope that by commissioning the TC100 website everyone will be able to contribute to capturing the excitement and importance of the moving image."

The programme of special re-opening events is part of NewcastleGateshead's world-class programme of festivals and events in 2008, managed by culture10 at NewcastleGateshead Initiative.
