Members of a borough charity have attended the Houses of Parliament to showcase their project for an international day.

Trustees from Whitley Bay-based charity Angels of the North were invited to London to share the success of their project for international Sewa Day, where the charity organised an event at the Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate involving 84 volunteers who collected books, wool, clothing, toys, medical supplies and toiletries from 182 locations in the borough, which were packed for families in North Tyneside, India and Nigeria.

The charity’s chairman Dr Hari Shukla and honorary chief executive officer Barbara Connors-Fowler were guests of honour hosted by MP Virendra Sharma.

Dr Shukla said: “In the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit, sewa means service’and I am so proud to have witnessed the support of so many people of all backgrounds for one of our current major volunteering projects.”
