Children join campaign

CHILDREN from Whitley Lodge First School will be given the opportunity to create their very own sculptures and learn about the importance of anti-bullying thanks to help from Park View Shopping Centre and Scribbly Artz.

Park View has linked up with the local company that teaches children about the significance and merits of recycling whilst also tackling topical issues.

Pupils at the Whitley Bay school will have the opportunity to discuss the importance of anti-bullying and what it means to them before expressing their feelings through the design of posters and creation of a sculpture.

Dezzy, who founded Scribbly Artz with his business partner Jane Gaunt, said: "Our main purpose is to teach kids the importance of recycling.

"We visit lots of schools across the region where we encourage children to get creative with recycled items, some of which we provide and others which we ask them to bring in from home."

Scribbly Artz visited Whitley Lodge First School during anti-bullying week where they held three one hour sessions, giving 90 children aged seven to nine the chance to get involved.

Tony Donnelly, centre manager at Park View Shopping Centre, said: "We've invited Scribbly-Artz to go along to Whitley Lodge First School in a bid to help highlight the issues surrounding bullying and the importance of anti-bullying campaigns.

"As a family orientated centre we want to encourage people to spend time together and work together and we think that this project is a great way to do that.

"Once complete we will then display the children's designs in the shopping centre for our customers to see," he said.

Fiona Lutman is the headteacher at the school, she said: "We're looking forward to welcoming Scribbly Artz to the school and the children are really excited about having the opportunity to create a sculpture. By its very nature this activity will be helping to tackle some of the underlying issues relating to bullying."

Anti-bullying week is a nationwide initiative led by the Anti-Bullying Alliance and runs from November 17 until November 21.
