A WHITLEY Bay nurse has been given the royal seal of approval for the high quality care she provides to patients.

Jenny Rasmussen, a respiratory nurse specialist at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, has been awarded the Queen’s Nurse title after being nominated by a patient.

Morpeth grandfather Gordon Hood, who has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder, put Jenny forward for the award as she “goes the extra mile”.

Jenny – the only nurse from the region to receive the award at the end of last year – is part of the trust’s long-term oxygen team based in Alnwick, providing support to patients requiring oxygen in their homes.

Gordon, 74, said: “Jenny is extremely good at her job and she has been a great help to me over the last couple of years.

“Not only has her expert advice and support helped me cope better with my COPD, she has given me the confidence to get out and about more on my scooter. To be honest she’s more like a friend than a nurse.

“Jenny thoroughly deserves the award – she’s a real gem and goes the extra mile to help.”

Jenny, who has been working as a nurse in the north east for more than 30 years, said: “It’s a massive honour to be given the title of Queen’s Nurse and the fact that I was nominated by a patient makes it extra special.

“To be recognised for delivering patient-centred care and going the extra mile is brilliant as that is what I’ve worked to achieve throughout my career.

“It’s a pleasure doing the job and seeing the difference we can make to patients’ lives is extremely rewarding.”

Rosemary Stephenson, director of nursing at the trust, said: “It is brilliant that Jenny has been given this prestigious title and we would like to congratulate her on her award. It rewards her commitment to providing high quality care to her patients and, most importantly, doing that little bit more which really makes a difference.”

Since the award, Jenny has become a community matron managing patients with complex illnesses.
