Children at a Wallsend school have been helping bring some Christmas cheer to people in their community.

Pupils at Western Community Primary School came up with some creative ways to raise money for their Angel Tree appeal.

Since last month, the youngsters have raised more than £1,200 in sponsorship, which they have used to buy presents and food hampers for the Wallsend branch of the Salvation Army.

These will go to families struggling to provide the basic necessities this Christmas.

Headteacher Claire Brown said: “We believe this is such an important charity appeal as it supports those in the very heart of our local community.

“It is an opportunity to help our children understand that there are families who may not be as lucky as they are this Christmas.

“Our children and their families are simply the best – their generosity at this time of year and in this current economic climate is humbling.”
