Creative writing courses target specific audience

BUDDING writers are being invited to attend one of two accredited creative writing courses being held in Whitley Bay.

Community group Culture Quarter is organising the courses, which are being accredited by the Centre for Lifelong Learning at Sunderland University.

Whitley Bay writer Barry Stone is running the two ten week courses called Imagining Whitley Bay, with the first one being free, and taking place on Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm, from September 9.

Phil Dixon, artistic manager of Culture Quarter, said: "It's important to say that because our intention is to provide non-fee paying places for those who were perhaps not given the best opportunities when younger, the first course is strictly not for participants who already have a university level qualification."

Barry said: "I've been teaching creative writing for 20 years, and more than ever before I think it's right to make an extra effort on those who are most likely to consider themselves as being no good at writing.

"Imagining Whitley Bay will prove this perception wrong.

"The course is open to men and women of all ages.

"We'll be taking a creative look at life in the town yesterday, today and tomorrow."

To enrol on either course, contact Phil Dixon on (0191) 253 0466 or e-mail phil@culturequarter.org
