North Shields Metro Station-regeneration story.

POLICE patrols have been stepped up on the Metro system in North Tyneside to target travelling criminals.

Officers are taking part in Operation Locomotion in a bid to make the public feel safe while keeping travelling criminals out of the borough.

Chief Inspector Mark Anastasi, of North Tyneside area command, said: “The Metro system is a great way to get around our region but we are aware criminals use the system too.

“That’s why officers are travelling on the Metro to monitor behaviour and quickly take action if offences are committed.

“This a safe method of travel and we want to send out a clear message to criminals that their offending behaviour won’t be tolerated by Northumbria Police.

“People intent on committing crime will be challenged by officers and arrested for any offences we find.

“We have used this operation a number of times and know it’s effective in reducing crime and helping to reassure the travelling public.”

Inspector Les Pattison, who leads the Northumbria Police Metro unit, said: “These sort of planned initiatives, working closely with Metro and area command officers, help us to keep it safe for the benefit of passengers.”

Richard McClean, managing director of Metro operator DB Regio Tyne and Wear, added: “We are fully supportive of this operation – we too want to reassure passengers that Metro is a safe way to travel.

“Passenger safety must always come first which is why we work closely with Northumbria Police on all passenger security related issues.”

Anyone with concerns about crime or disorder where they live can contact their local neighbourhood policing team on 101 ext 69191 or alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
