Cruise tourism boost north east economy
SINCE 2004 the Port of Tyne has successfully been attracting cruise ships to the region, and it is estimated that cruise tourism contributes more than £5m to the region's economy.
Ensuring passengers have a memorable welcome and that they enjoy their time in port is very important, as a result on July 20 the Port of Tyne hosted Tea on the Quay, serving traditional Ringtons tea and scones made by Greggs the baker; when passengers were treated to typical afternoon tea.
In 2008 the Port of Tyne began to welcome visitors to the region by offering them a "Taste of Northumberland", giving passengers and crew a flavour of our region by sampling local produce, the Taste of Northumberland welcomes were a huge success with passengers many wanting to take produce home.

by Plan Tours will be exploring the rich heritage of the north east visiting tourist attractions such as Alnwick Castle and Hadrian's Wall.
The Port of Tyne has received a total of 73,241 cruise tourists between 2006 and 2008, making it one of the fastest growing ports in Europe and earning the port the title of runner up Cruise Port of the Year in 2008.
Last year a total of 29 cruise ships visited the Port of Tyne either on transit or turnaround calls. This year 23 ships are confirmed with a further 20 already provisionally booked for 2010 including a first call from P&O.

"Ringtons are another local company famed for doorstep deliveries and what better way to deliver Tea right to the quay. Suzanne Goldie, Ringtons marketing co-ordinator added: "We will be bringing our famous Fleur De Lys van to the Port of Tyne to add more interest to the day."
