A day centre has received a cash boost of nearly £4,000.

The Shiremoor Day Centre, run by St John Ambulance, was chosen by the Sainsbury’s Northumberland Park store as it’s charity of the year.

Staff organised a series of events from festive family fun days, summer barbecues and race nights while bag packing raised almost £1,000.

The centre provides a caring and safe environment for people who may be elderly, socially isolated or have physical or learning disabilities.

Diane Moralee, Shiremoor Day Centre manager, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the very generous donation. Every penny raised helps us to deliver a vital service to vulnerable members of our community.”

Tracey Frost, PR ambassador at the Sainsbury’s store, said: “We have thoroughly enjoyed raising money for the Shiremoor Day Centre and know that our donation will go some way to help enhance the lives of centre users.”
