A YOUTH and community centre in Longbenton has celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Around 120 people packed into the Longbenton Methodist Church for a special service for Balliol Youth and Community Centre.

The centre was opened in 1963 after responding to the Albemarle Report, and Longbenton Methodist Church embarked on a fundraising campaign to establish the facility to serve the needs of the people of the Longbenton estate.

As part of the service, president of the Methodist Conference, Rev Dr Mark Wakelin, planted an oak tree from the royal forest.

He also dedicated 400 trees which will in time form the Longbenton Jubilee Wood.
